The labour market faced by young Australians is different from those markets that any other generation has experienced. The “old” and the “young” now compete in ways never anticipated [and still not really understood] by policy makers or the wider/general population.
The My First Job is an SYC initiative that recognises the changing landscape for young people seeking their first ‘real’ job. As employers (Government included) increasingly opt for employees who have at least two years’ experience, it has become increasingly difficult for young people to actually get those two years’ experience, particularly in their chosen field or career.
My First Job seeks to drive change within government and the private sector towards the provision and support of genuine entry level jobs for workplace entrants. While hospitality or retail positions play a significant role in providing first jobs for young people, they do not always represent the preferred career path for young people. Nor do they necessarily represent long term career growth opportunities.
My First Job aims to establish supports for young people in their transition from learning to working. It advocates for greater awareness of the difficulties young people face in gaining entry level employment and of the impact of youth unemployment on Australia’s economic health.
